Instructor

Associate Professor Deborah Miller, PhD, LISW

Deborah M. Miller, PhD, LISW, is a Professional Staff member at the Mellen Center for Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research at Cleveland Clinic and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. She holds a joint appointment in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences and has been part of the Mellen Center's interdisciplinary-care team since 1985. Dr. Miller's expertise lies in marital and family adjustment to multiple sclerosis (MS) and health services research, particularly in developing and validating quality-of-life assessment tools for MS patients. She has led significant initiatives, including the development of telehealth interventions for MS care and clinical practice guidelines for MS treatment. Dr. Miller has served as a principal investigator and co-investigator on various nationally funded research projects and holds a prominent role in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, where she was inducted into the Health Care Professionals and Researchers Volunteer Hall of Fame in 2005.

Senior Programs Consultant Rosalind Kalb, PhD

Rosalind Kalb, PhD, is a clinical psychologist who has specialized in MS care, support and education for over 30 years. After receiving her doctorate from Fordham University in 1977, she began her career in MS, providing individual, group, and family therapy at the Medical Rehabilitation Research and Training Center for MS at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and then at the MS Comprehensive Care Center in White Plains, NY. Dr. Kalb joined the National MS Society in 2000, creating online resources and educational materials for individuals and families living with MS and healthcare professionals until 2017. She continues her resource development work for the Society as a consultant. Dr.Kalb is senior author of Multiple Sclerosis for Dummies (2nd ed.), and co-author of Multiple Sclerosis: Understanding the Cognitive Challenges. In addition, Dr. Kalb has edited two books–Multiple Sclerosis: The Questions You Have; The Answers You Need, now in its 5th edition, and Multiple Sclerosis: A Guide for Families, now in its 3rd edition. Dr. Kalb has also served as a Can Do program consultant since 2001.

Clinical Psychologist Meghan Beier, PhD

Dr. Beier is a rehabilitation neuropsychologist in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins. Featured in publications such as People Magazine, Psychology Today, AARP she is a nationally recognized expert on how mood and cognition impact people living with multiple sclerosis. She is also the founder of Find Empathy, findempathy.com, an online directory and educational platform that helps connect people with chronic medical conditions to therapists who understand their diagnosis.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
This course is intended for psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, and therapists.

The instructional level is introductory to intermediate. While the course provides a comprehensive overview of traumatic brain injury, professionals need to already have a foundational grasp on therapeutic principles such as CBT and mindfulness in order to adapt those treatments to the specific needs of people living with traumatic brain injury.

The primary format of the course is a non-interactive distance-learning recorded video or audio continuing education course.
